The Story of

Rivierhead Villa

Where History Meets Manaakitanga

Built in 1871, Restored for Today

The History of Riverhead Villa

Originally built by a Kauri Mill owner in the 1870s, the Riverhead homestead was moved to its current hilltop location in Horeke during the 1970s. From here, it offers sweeping views of the Hokianga Harbour.

The kauri timber used in its construction still stands strong, over 150 years later.

In 2020, Utakura 7 Investments Ltd acquired the villa for its shareholders, descendants of the local iwi with deep connections to the land and sea. Their goal is to create opportunities for the community while welcoming guests into the heart of the Hokianga.

At Riverhead Villa, manaakitanga—the Māori value of hospitality—guides everything we do. It’s about making guests feel so welcome they never want to leave.

Today, the villa blends its historic charm with modern comforts, offering a space where the past and present meet to create a truly special stay.

Hospitality

A Place of Manaakitanga

At Riverhead Villa, manaakitanga—the Māori tradition of hospitality and care—is woven into every aspect of your stay. We believe that welcoming guests goes beyond providing a comfortable room; it’s about offering a space where you feel nurtured, respected, and at home.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll experience the warmth of our community, a reflection of the deep-rooted values of the land and people of the Hokianga. Whether it’s through the thoughtful touches in your room, the freshly prepared meals, or the genuine care shown by your hosts, you’ll feel the essence of manaakitanga in every detail.

We take pride in making sure that when you leave, you do so with a sense of connection—to the place, the people, and the stories that make Riverhead Villa so special.
